Tasting Notes

From one of the Margret River’s best wineries comes the best Chardonnay of 2016.

It’s an expressive Chardonnay that lives on the leaner side of the spectrum. The team at Flametree ferment the Chardonnay in40% new French oak puncheons before being rested for 10 months on lees – only stirred a few times. The palate is fresh. Grapefruit and dried pear start on the tongue but give way to savoury notes of oyster shell and a slight hint of saline. A Chardonnay for Chardonnay fanatics.

97 Points James Halliday , Wine Companion

“The freshness and intensity of the palate led to the trophy for Best Chardonnay at the Sydney Wine Show '17. Winemaker Cliff Royle picked the amount of new oak, and the time the wine spent in oak, to perfection, placing maximum focus on the perfectly ripe flavours. ”

97 Points Ray Jordan , The West Weekend

“Cliff Royle really does know how to make some high-class chardonnay. This is another cracker made from fruit sourced in the Wallcliffe subregion. Deliberately made towards the more restrained modern style, yet you can't take the Margaret River power out of these wines. A touch of char, light stone fruit and flinty dry finish ... are precisely focused. Outstanding. Show more Show less

94 Points Gary Walsh , The Wine Front

“Check it out now, the funk soul brother. It’s the stuck match, the funk soul rubber. White peach, spiced cashews, ripe grapefruit. Light to medium bodied, smoke and sulphide, cool acidity, flinty texture, lime, grapefruit and white peach, heaps of tangy length, layered with smoke and spice and the tingy tangy taste of lemon ... . Excellent wine, but you have to like them on the leaner, more worked side. Show more Show less
