Winery Profile: SOUMAH Wines

How much do you know about the Yarra Valley’s cool-climate wineries and its fresh produce?

Dmitri Lázariuc, from SOUMAH Winery, was our guest to find out more about the wines that the winery has to offer wine lovers around the world.

SOUMAH’s Rich History

SOUMAH, founded in 2008 by the Butcher Family, has roots in the Yarra Valley that date back 30 years.

The name comes from the vineyard’s location – South Of Maroondah, or SOUMAH – which is in the Yarra Valley wine region of Gruyere near Coldstream. The Butchers have been in Victoria for many generations, and they have a long-standing connection to the land. Frank Wynyard Butcher was the family patriarch and horticulturalist at the DPI. He worked there for over 30 years,” Dmitri explains.

Wine Specialties

SOUMAH is able to produce styles and varieties reminiscent of Northern Italy, South-East France, and the cool climate conditions typical of the Yarra Valley.

“Our Hexham Vineyard on the Warramate Foothills, is our mainstay for production. However, we also look to other vineyards for small parcels that are of high quality to produce other single-vineyard wine. Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah are our most awarded wines. Dmitri continues, “I have a great passion for Northern Italian varietals like our Nebbiolo (Savagnin), Brachetto (Pinot Grigio), and Savarro.

Meet the Winemaker

Scott McCarthy is the chief winemaker of SOUMAH. Listen to his style and philosophy of winemaking when he talks about SOUMAH Chardonnay, the flagship wine.

Our Chardonnay philosophy is to pack as much flavor and depth into the wine as possible but without any edges. The wine should have pristine accents of fruit, a fine acidity, light oakiness, and a light creaminess. All of it must be there but in a light and moderate way. “Yarra Valley Chardonnay is a wine of a new era; it’s linear and fresh,” Scott exclaims.

Northern Italian cuisine in the heart of the Yarra Valley

Dining at SOUMAH will immerse you in the rich aromas and flavors of Northern Italy. The Trattoria-style dining room is a great place to experience this. The Chef’s menu focuses on relaxation and fresh food.

Our Chef has prepared authentic favorites like Bacalao and Beef Carpaccio. He also created Vegetarian Orechiette with Duck Ragu. Swordfish with Caponata. Slow Cooked Lamb Shoulder, Herb Crusted Pork Schnitzel, and Tagliatelle. Don’t forget our Forno Bravo pizzas, from the classic Margherita up to the spicy Pepperoni,” adds Dmitri.

World-Class Events in a Picturesque Set

SOUMAH is no stranger to fully catered events executed with style and efficiency. Dmitri explains that their event packages cover everything from wine samplings to five-course dinners.

“At SOUMAH, we cater to intimate groups of up to 25 persons. From tastings to a five-course lunch paired with SOUMAH wine, we take care of it all. Our packages are perfect for celebrating the most important milestones in life with friends, colleagues, or family. “Our event packages are perfect for your Christmas parties,” says he.
