The grapes that make the most popular French, Italian and Spanish wines might not come originated from Europe but rather Georgia, the Western Asian country of Georgia according to a study.
Italian researchers analyzed the genomes of 204 common grapevines in Georgia and discovered evidence suggests that a single “domestication incident took place within Western Asia.
The experts discovered that the emergence of wine grapes like Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir took place during the same time frame, and it was then followed by a myriad of and widespread interbreeding of wine grapes originated from Georgia and Europe according to The Times.
The results differ from other theories that suggest that European wines were derived from wild grapes that were found on the continent, without interbreeding or crossing with grapes from Western Europe.
Georgia has claimed its history of producing wine for over 8,000 years – more than any other nation because archaeologists have discovered evidence of wine residues in old clay vessels.
The study, released in Nature Communications, also ‘identified the genetic markers for breeding selection and domestication which determine the variety of grapes that are used to make wine today as reported by the newspaper.
The authors found similar degrees of genetic variation both in wild grapes as well as in the varieties that are used in today’s winemaking according to the study conducted by Italian researchers Michele Morgante, Gabriele Di Gaspero, and colleagues said.
