“My job as a winemaker is to create the frame for our consumers to experience our vineyard and site”

Ray Nadeson

Lethbridge Wines

A question of ‘what if?’ sparked the beginning of a successful wine journey for friends and wine-lovers Ray Nadeson, Maree Collis and Adrian Thomas. In the mid-90s, the trio were busy establishing their careers in science and medicine, when they decided to take a chance and invest in a winery. And thus, in 1996, Lethbridge was born.

Before phylloxera was discovered, the Moorabool Valley in the Geelong wine region was the largest grape-growing region in Victoria. In recent decades, new vines have been planted and the region is undergoing a resurgence, with winemakers and consumers rediscovering all that the rich Geelong terroir has to offer. Lethbridge is a leader among these wineries – focusing on forward-looking, provocative wines.

As well as understanding the importance of terroir, Lethbridge has built a unique straw-bale winery, designed to recreate the controlled environment of cellars and caves common throughout Europe. Combining bio dynamic techniques with traditional winemaking practices, Lethbridge has succeeded in creating premium wines that are evocative and highly respected.

Winemaker - Ray Nadeson

The winemaking process at Lethbridge is in the inspired hands of Ray Nadeson; one of the founding owners.

Initially training as a research scientist with a PhD degree in medicine, Ray embarked on a winemaking degree at Charles Sturt University when he and his friends established Lethbridge. In 2003, after seven years of balancing career and passion, Ray turned his attention to the winery full time.

Ray’s philosophy is centred on the importance of terroir – using minimal intervention and traditional techniques which allow the region to shine. He is committed to practising organic techniques that are influenced by biodynamic methods to establish a healthy, balanced vineyard.

His passion and knowledge have seen him become a highly respected winemaker. James Halliday dubbed him “a master builder of full-bodied, long-lived Pinot." His wines consistently impress critics and consumers alike.
